How-to: Update your origin server IP with Deflect

1 min read

The IP address of the origin server is your server’s IPv4 address that you registered with Deflect. “Origin” means the original source from which the traffic is served. By contracts, Deflect Edge server is the server which the traffic flows through.

Note: If you are an eQPress client, you do not need to update your origin server IP as it is managed by us.

To update your origin server IP, you must first determine whether your hosting provider supports IP reassignment.

In case of IP reassignment #

  • Request your hosting provider to reassign the IP of your server
  • Obtain the new IP
  • Update the new IP on Deflect control panel

Updates of origin IP on Deflect take approximately 5 to 30 minutes to deploy across the network. Therefore, it is recommended to perform these updates during the periods when network traffic is at its lowest.

In case IP reassignment is not available #

  • Build a new server by taking a snapshot of your server and re-create a new server using that snapshot
  • Verify if the new server is working by accessing the new IP directly via HTTP(s)
  • Update the new IP on Deflect control panel
  • Verify if traffic is hitting your new server from Deflect by reading web server access logs
  • Disable the old server

Ensure that traffic can reach both the former and new IP addresses during the transition process is highly recommended.

Lastly, consider securing your origin by allowlisting Deflect Edge IP to enhance the security of your server.
